For the year 2017, Electrical engineering consists of 65 questions carrying a total of 100 marks. Out of these 65 questions, 10 questions carrying a total of 15 marks will be on General Aptitude (GA). Rest of the 55 questions will be from Technical and Engineering Mathematics section.

In GATE 2017, there will be negative marking for the multiple choice type questions.
- For, 1-mark multiple-choice questions, 1/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer.
- For 2-mark multiple-choice questions, 2/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer.
- There is NO negative marking for numerical answer type questions.

Since 2005, a lot of changes has been subjected to the GATE exam pattern. Initially the paper carried a total of 150 marks including 90 questions. Later on, the number of questions and marks dropped to 60 and 100 in 2009. From 2010 onwards, the number of questions increased to 65 and the total marks allotted to the paper was 100. From 2014 onwards, GATE examination was conducted in multiple sessions.
