How to get recruited as a Probationary Officer (PO) in the State Bank of India?

The Recruitment Process for joining SBI as a Probationary Officer involves a 3 Tier Selection Process. The 3 layers of selection are as follows.

  1. Preliminary Written Examination (Objective)
  2. Mains Written Examination (Objective & Descriptive)
  3. Group Exercises and Interview

The Final Merit List is prepared after calculating scores secured in SBI PO Mains Exam, Group Exercises, and Interview. Preliminary Examination is only qualifying in nature. Once your name/ roll number appears in the merit list, you are recruited by the State Bank of India.

 

SBI PO Job Profile: Roles and Responsibilities 

Once you are able to crack SBI PO Recruitment Process, you serve a 2 year Probation Period during which the major roles and responsibilities are explained in detail. You should understand that a Probationary Officer moves up the career ladder to hold many senior positions provided he/ she consistently perform well. Some of the roles and responsibility of an SBI Probationary Officer are as follows.

Customers Services: Customer service is an important, but broad concept in the banking industry. Banking business depends on the customers only. Therefore, customer service is very important for an officer. In their branches, POs will be asked to look into the concerns of the customers coming for loans, opening of new accounts, ATM services, deposits, chequebooks, credit cards and online banking etc.

Adding New Business: As POs are direct channels of dealing with customers, so as a direct representative of banks, they have the responsibility of promoting various banking products. These products include Recurring Deposits, Fixed Deposits, Insurance policies, Funds, Credit Cards, Loans, etc.  Initially, POs are not under any pressure of selling these products, but as they grow older in their jobs,  they get targets & deadlines for selling these products.

Cash Handling: As a PO, you have to perform cash related activities like cash disbursal & cash collection from cashiers. In the time of excessive work pressure, you may be required to perform the clerical duties as well. As an officer, you are also responsible for loading the cash in the ATM machines.

Payment Clearances:  As an officer, you need to authorize some payments by way of cheque, DD, NEFT/ RTGS beyond a certain amount.

Maintain Reports: To avoid any mismatch, you have to close all the work on a daily basis.  Officers would be assigned to generate reports that may include the deposits, withdrawals, ledger balances, etc.

Daily Work Communication: As POs need to interact with the customers, they have the key responsibility of maintaining a track of new developments to improve their product knowledge. As a PO, you will have to send official replies to other departments.

Since working with SBI is basically another level, these roles and responsibilities will be carried in an intense format due to the level of services and the number of customers catered by the Bank.

SBI PO Salary, Perks and Allowances

This is definitely one aspect of SBI PO which attracts most of the banking aspirants. Depending on the posting, perks, and allowance, an SBI PO can make 8.20 lacs and maximum of 13.08 lacs depending on the place of posting and other factors, which is an outrageous figure. Let us break down the basic pay, fixed salary, perks and understand how much salary you can draw as an SBI PO.

Salary of an SBI Probationary Officer

Presently, the starting basic pay is 27,620/- (with 4 advance increments) in the scale of 23700-980/7-30560-1145/2-32850-1310/7-42020 applicable to Junior Management Grade Scale-I. The official will also be eligible for D.A, H.R.A/ Lease rental, C.C.A, Medical and other allowances & perquisites as per rules in force from time to time. The total compensation per annum on CTC basis be a minimum of 8.20 lacs and maximum of 13.08 lacs depending on the place of posting and other factors.

  • Basic Pay: Rs. 27620.00
  • Dearness Allowance (DA): It will lie between 30 to 50% of the Basic Pay. In Banks, DA is revised quarterly and is based on the CPI data as revealed by Government of India.
  • CCA: This is paid @ 4%, 3% or 0% depending on the place of posting.
  • Special Allowance: For officers, it is paid @ a rate of  7.75%

Apart from this, here are a few additional perks

  • Leased accommodation range from Rs8,000/- in ‘C’ category Centers to Rs 29,500/- in Mumbai Centre.
  • Home Travel Concession/ Leave Fare Concession.
  • Medical Aid for self (100%) and for family (75%).

Hence, once you are able to calculate the entire sum, an SBI PO can easily earn anywhere between 8 to 13 Lakhs in a year.

SBI PO Career Prospects and Opportunities 

While selecting a career choice, it is recommended that an aspirant should know the career roadmap of the opted line of work. In the case of SBI PO, the career path is highly progressive. Promotions happen every 3-4 years since SBI is one of the largest banks of India and accommodates a large workforce. The career path can be along the following line

  1. Probationary Officer (Assistant Manager, JMGS I)
  2. Deputy Manager (MMGS II)
  3. Manager (MMGS III)
  4. Chief Manager (SMGS IV)
  5. AGM (SMGS V)
