Firstly start from MATHE(15 MARKS) AND GA(15 M) Then from 2nd onwards subject but as per the syllabus in gate and practice all old papers for getting an idea of how questions framed.

Gate covers all subjects from 2nd year to last year, so it would be wise to join it in your second year to get well versed to the subjects beforehand
