August 8, 2018, marked the biggest nightmare for the people living in Kerala. Kerala received heavy monsoon rainfall on the mid-evening of August 8 resulting in dams filling to capacity; in the first 24 hours of rainfall. Almost all dams have been opened since the water level has risen close to overflow level due to heavy rainfall, flooding local low-lying areas. For the first time in the state’s history, 35 of its 42 dams have been opened.

The flood hit Kerala is now facing the shortage of drugs leaving many staying in rehabilitation camps across the state without essential medicines. As houses have been completely waterlogged and destroyed, many have become homeless and taken refuge in relief camps. Several people have even been marooned in their own houses, without food, water, electricity, and other basic supplies.

In some respite from Kerala, the red alert has been withdrawn from all the districts of Kerala. Eleven districts are on orange alert. The centre and states have pledged to contribute to Kerala flood relief. Hundreds of people have died and lakhs have been relocated to relief camps.
