Always follow the format

The most important letter writing tips of all is to follow the format. A deviation or change in the topic will lead to deduction in marks. The general format of a letter is given below:

  1. Heading of a letter comprises of two parts i.e. address of the writer and the date. Heading can be written on the Left corner of the first page of the letter.
  2. Salutation or Greeting is an important part of the letter which can never be omitted. Always place the salutation at the left hand of the page, at a lower level to the Heading. Moreover, the first and last word of the salutation should start in Capital Letters (of alphabet).
  3. Subject: Mention the purpose of the letter in short. The subject should be in upper-case characters and aligned either to the left or to the center.
  4. Body:  The body must cover the entirety of the subject that has been given in the question. The length of the body should not exceed than 3 paragraphs.
  5. Subscription: A polite form of thanking. It is generally written on the left hand side corner of the lines after the body. It should start with a capital letter and end with a comma.
  6. Designation follows the subscription.

Do not be overly descriptive, neither too precise

You can write short paragraphs, say made up of five lines. However, the length of your sentence may vary. The aim of writing a letter is to convey something important and that cannot wait. So, write only important details without any fluff.

Avoid Repetition

There should never be any repetition of the content matter in a letter. Repeating a word again and again in the letter does not look appealing. You can make use of synonyms for the words if you wish to use them again.

Check the Language

Learn to distinguish between formal and informal writing styles. Discourage using adjectives and adverb. Be direct using nouns and verbs in formal letter writing. You should follow a formal language which is polite in nature. Even in informal letters, you must express the ideas

Maintain A Flow

Maintain a flow in the letter so that it is easier for a reader to comprehend it. A crisp introduction leading to the body followed by a conclusion is the most desirable structure for a letter. You must not deviate from this flow as it will prove to create a distort letter.

Check the Tone

Checking the tone of the passage is a must. A reek of confidence should flourish in your letter rather than arrogance. Even if you are writing a complaint letter, you must give relevant points and reasons instead of slamming the authorities. Explain situations descriptively and follow a polite tone.

Practice is the only secret to a good letter, as it makes you perfect at it. So, acquaint yourself with the format and examples and practice as much as you can. You can practice with mock tests and various question banks which are available online.

Know the Essay Format

It is important for all candidates to understand that essays do not mean scribbling down your thoughts in the order that they appear to you. Essays are formatted text that flows a structured path beginning with introductions and end in logical conclusions. Here is an essay format outline, for example, have a look:

  1. Introduction
  2. Background / History related
  3. Main concept / theory / what the subject is about
  4. Current scenario related to it.
  5. Good sides
  6. Negative sides / obstacles
  7. Suggested reforms
  8. Conclusion.

Never Beat Around the Bush

Examiners scrutinize your essays for useful information, logical arguments, and sensible conclusions. Beating about the bush only frustrates the examiner discouraging him to pay heed to the rest of the text.  Make a rule that every line that you write conveys something meaningful and that you are not ranting random thoughts throughout the paper.

Have a Logically Correct Structure

One of the most important essay writing tips of all is to write the content in a flowing structure. Jumping on and off topic spoils the beauty of an essay. There needs to be a logical continuation from beginning to end. It is a good practice to organize the essay into well-structured paragraphs that are easy to understand and comply with the logical structure of the essay.

Avoid Being Repetitive

Do not repeat anything that you write in the paper, that’s the simple rule. Let each paragraph deal with a point without any further repetition later on unless absolutely necessary.

Don’t Deviate Off-Topic

Go off topic and you risk losing the interest of the examiner forever. Additionally, this would be counted as bad essay etiquette and can result in bad marks.

Be Mindful of the Tone of your Writing

A neutral point of view and a little human concern sane up to the tone of your essay making it meritorious. Abusive language, irrational musings, and flowery language can change the meaning of the sentences as they create confusion.
