Engineering Mathematics + Technical | 55 | 85 (15+70) |
Total | 65 | 100 |
In GATE 2017, there will be negative marking for the multiple choice type questions.
- For, 1-mark multiple-choice questions, 1/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer.
- For 2-mark multiple-choice questions, 2/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer.
- There is NO negative marking for numerical answer type questions.
Once you get acquainted with the exam pattern, you must drag your attention towards previous year’s papers analysis. Not only does it help you in filtering out the important topics but also helps you understand the structure in a better perspective.
So, it is imperative to know the pattern of questions and distribution of marks of the topics covered in GATE exam. Let’s have a look at our Electrical Engineering subject weightage for the years 2014 & 2015 and analyze the important topics.
GATE Electrical Engineering Subject Weightage for 2014-2015
From 2010 onwards, the GATE exam pattern took a dramatic turn. The number of questions reduced to 65 and the total marks allotted to the paper was 100. This resulted in change in distribution of marks among the topics. Have a look at our previous article for an in-depth analysis of GATE Electrical Engineering Subject Weightage for the years 2005-2013:
- GATE Electrical Engineering Subject Weightage 2005-2009

Analysis of Electrical Engineering Subject Weightage of Marks
Now, let’s move to our analysis of Electrical Engineering subject weightage of marks for years 2014 & 2015 including all the sessions and try to analyze the important topics for each.
Name of the Subject | 2014 | 2015 | |||
EE 1 | EE 2 | EE 3 | EE 1 | EE 2 | |
Engineering Mathematics | 11 | 11 | 10 | 10 | 11 |
Network Theory | 6 | 6 | 8 | 9 | 9 |
Signals and Systems | 8 | 8 | 10 | 5 | 8 |
Control Systems | 8 | 8 | 8 | 11 | 8 |
Analog Circuits | 6 | 6 | 5 | 5 | 7 |
Digital Circuits | 5 | 7 | 6 | 7 | 5 |
Electromagnetic Theory | 3 | 3 | 5 | 4 | 0 |
Measurement | 6 | 6 | 6 | 4 | 4 |
Power Electronics | 8 | 7 | 6 | 9 | 6 |
Electrical Machines | 11 | 13 | 13 | 11 | 18 |
Power Systems | 13 | 10 | 8 | 10 | 9 |
General Aptitude | 15 | 15 | 15 | 15 | 15 |
Total | 100 | 100 | 100 | 100 | 100 |
From the above information, it is clear that Electrical Machines and Power Systems carries a higher weightage of marks. We can see a significant change in the marks distribution of Electromagnetic Theory between the years 2014-2015. Network Theory and Control Systems also carry a lot of weighatge of marks.
Least weightage of marks is seen under the topic Electromagnetic Theory. In this way, you will able to filter out topics from each year and can prepare accordingly. However, we do not advise the candidates to leave any topic. You must strive to cover each and every topic but you should do so with the time constraint in mind. Try to concentrate more on topics of higher significance and maintain a proper strategy.
