History of India by Bipin Chandra
Buddhists Attack On Muslims in Myanmar
Since 2012, Myanmar suffered violence between different communities, most of it involving Buddhists attacking Muslims. It ranged from localised, fleeting, inter-group violence, to large scale, apparently well-organised, state-supported killing and destruction of property of a targeted group, running over a number of days.
The most serious and protracted violence, which left hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people dead and over a hundred thousand displaced, was in Rakhine State. There, its objects were people variously identified as Rohingya, or Bengali Muslims. The large-scale anti-Muslim violence followed in Mandalay Region and Shan State; smaller incidents, some isolated, others sequential, occurred elsewhere.
Recently, Police in Myanmar’s city fired warning shots overnight to break up a fight between dozens of Buddhists and Muslims that left at least one person injured.
It was the latest manifestation of years of rising anti-Muslim sentiment in the prevalent Buddhist nation, where ultra-nationalist Buddhist monks and their supporters forced the closure of two Muslim schools in Yangon last month. The confrontation began when Buddhist hard-liners entered a Muslim neighbourhood claiming some ethnic Rohingya Muslims were hiding “illegally” in the area. Police fired two warning shots to disperse the crowds. At least one Muslim man was hospitalised with injuries to his head.
Tensions between Buddhist and Muslims has spread across Myanmar since a violent fight broke out between ethnic Rakhine Buddhists and Muslim Rohingya in 2012.
