Turkey Coup

Member of Turkey’s armed forces attempted to stage a coup in the country. Over 180 people were killed and 1,470 were injured during the events, while nearly 3,000 people have already been detained, according to the Turkish government. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that the government restored full control over the country.

Why In News

Recently Turkish military attempted coup against civilian government under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. A coup is an illegal attempt to overthrow those in power by force. It comes from the French coup d’etat, which translates as “blow of state”. Turkey has a history of military coups, but had not experienced one for nearly two decades.

Reasons for Turkish military coup

  • The modern Turkish republic was founded in 1923 by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, a former military officer deeply committed to a form of democratic nationalism and hard-line secularism now called Kemalism. The Turkish military sees itself as the guardian of Kemalism, and has overthrown four Turkish governments since 1960 in the name of protecting Turkey’s democracy from chaos and Islamic influence. Each time afterward, the military has returned the country to democracy – though in a degraded form.
  • Turkish Armed Forces, claimed that they’d done so in the name of protecting democracy – despite the fact that Erdogan and his party were democratically elected.

Who is behind the coup

Erdogan quickly blamed low-ranking military officers who rebelled against their superiors. He later pointed across the Atlantic, to a small, leafy Pennsylvania town that is home to his bitter rival: Fethullah Gulen, a reclusive cleric who leads a popular movement called Hizmet. The 75-year old imam went into self-imposed exile when he moved from Turkey to the United States in 1999 and settled in Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania.

Fethullah Gulen

Muhammed Fethullah Gülen is a Turkish preacher, former imam,]writer, and political figure. He is the founder of the Gülen movement (known as Hizmet meaning service in Turkish), and the inspiration figure for its largest organization, the Alliance for Shared Values. He currently lives in exile in the United States, residing in Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania. He is reportedly sought by the Turkish government for alleged involvement in the 2016 coup attempt in Turkey.

  • Gülen is a powerful business figure in Turkey and—to put it mildly—a controversial one. He is also an increasingly influential businessman globally. There are somewhere between 3 million and 6 million Gülen followers—or, to use the term they prefer, people who are “inspired” by him.
  • Gulen lives in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania, United States and earlier was the supporter of Mr Erdogan.
  • Mr Erdogan has long accused the cleric and his supporters of attempting to overthrow the government.
  • Fethullah Gulen promotes a philosophy that blends a mystical form of Islam and staunchly supports democracy, education, science and interfaith dialogue.

Current Scenario

Turkey’s government validated that the coup is majorly under control and that the military had failed to seize control of Turkey’s government.

Impact of Turkey’s coup on U.S. led war on ISIS

  • Turkey has a important role as a NATO member bridging Europe and the Middle East, and as a host to anti-Islamic State aircraft and dozens of nuclear weapons.
  • US jets take off from an air base in southern Turkey to bomb ISIS targets.
  • In the short term there will be a freeze on Turkey-US military cooperation and this crisis may heavily affect the war on ISIS.
