The book is relatively concise when compared to books on the same topic by other authors. It captures the holistic view of not only struggle for independence but also the later Mughal period (post Aurangzeb), the decline of central authority, rise of regional satraps and the domination of tribes from Afghanistan. Those who are preparing for Civil Services should definitely go through this book twice or thrice, especially as in the new pattern.

IAS Topic 2: Torkham Issue

Torkham is one of the major International border crossings between Pakistan and Afghanistan, located on the Torkham international border. It connects Nangahar Province of Afghanistan and Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and Khyber Pakhtunkhwah.

Historical Background

  • In 1893 a treaty was signed between British government and Amir of Afghanistan Abdur Rahman Khan and subsequently validated by Britain and Afghanistan.
  • Afghanistan’s government since independence has not accepted the Durand line as the international border between Afghanistan and Pakistan. It was drawn up in 1893 as the border between British India and Afghanistan.

What is the issue regarding Torkham Border

Pakistan’s View: Pakistan claims that it would like to restrict the movement of people across the border and make it legal. The unregulated border allows refugees, smugglers and militants to cross over into Pakistan without detection. Pakistan wants to secure its borders and regulate the flow of people and goods from Afghanistan through this border area.

Afghanistan’s View: Afghanistan is apprehensive that making the border point in Torkham completely legal and document-based will affect the larger movement of Pashtuns across the Durand Line difficult and selective. The successive Afghanistan government refused to accept Durand Line as the international border between both the nations.
