Linguistic states are the states divided on the basis of language. It is common in a multilingual country where diverse languages are spoken. The most spoken language of that state becomes the official language of that particular state. Linguistic states are formed to strengthen the administration. States are able to preserve their language and culture, as the states are allowed to have official language through Constitutional provision. Formation of Linguistic states has enabled the preservation of state culture and festivals. With time, the people have come to cherish the traditions of different states. For example, Dandiya celebrations have become popular in Mumbai. Another favourable aspect of the formation of linguistic states is that it helps in reduction in protests and demonstration among the groups with same languages bringing them closer and more united.

However, despite these advantages, there are some significant challenges involved which are as under:

  • Opposition of National Official Language
  • Regionalism Growth
  • Deterioration of Center-State relations
  • Hampers the Feeling of Nationality
  • Increased demands for separate states
  • Sovereignty Threat

As a result, there are several present issues that are a threat to India’s integrity. Eg: Vidarbha issue, Assam Bodo Fights over resources, Andhra Pradesh & Telangana issue, Demand for separate Bundelkhand state etc. Granting genuine demands of separate states will not be detrimental to India as they’ll improve the representation of the region at the national level but “We are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided”.
