Micro Plastic Pellets

A recent study by the National Institute of Oceanography has come to the conclusion that Marine organisms along Goa’s shoreline are facing a threat from the huge plastic debris that gets washed ashore during the monsoon season. Plastic coupled with accidental spills from vessels during their transport through shipping routes, is posing a bigger challenge to coastal environment.

What are MPPs?

  • Micro plastic pellets (MPPs) are ubiquitous contaminants, recognised as a serious threat to the biota in coastal, estuarine and marine environment.

Types

  1. Primary: Plastics that are manufactured to be of a microscopic size are defined as primary micro plastics.
  2. Secondary: Secondary micro plastics describe tiny plastic fragments derived from the breakdown of larger plastic debris, both at sea and on land.

Key Finds at Goa Beach

  • White colour MPPs were the most abundant, and Polyethylene (PE) and Polypropylene (PP) were the dominant polymer types of MPPs deposited on all the beaches. Characteristics of MPPs suggest that they could be originated primarily from ocean-based sources. The winds and surface currents during SW monsoon are the driving forces for the transportation and deposition of MPPs on the Goa beaches.

Threats

  • Ingestion of micro plastics has been demonstrated in a range of marine organisms, a process which may facilitate the transfer of chemical additives or hydrophobic waterborne pollutants to biota.
  • Over prolonged periods, exposure to sunlight can result in photo-degradation of plastics; ultraviolet (UV) radiation in sun-light causes oxidation of the polymer matrix the transfer of toxic chemicals to biota via micro plastic ingestion is a significant concern.
  • Also degradation of plastic releases the toxic chemicals which poses serious threat to not only marine organsms but whole biodiversity apart from polluting the waters.
  • Similarly layer of MPPs once formed blocks the sunlight thus affecting marine food production. It also increases the Biological Oxygen Demand for the marine life choking them of fresh oxygen leading to their death.
