Learn to use Short Tricks
Remembering short tricks for solving the Quantitative Aptitude section can be a lifesaver because of limited time span for any competitive exam. Memorize and familiarize yourself with tricks that help in solving difficult questions. Try different tricks!!
To begin with, let us solve this basic question. You need to find which one is the higher of the following two –
a) 3% of 234
b) 234% of 3
Most of the students would say that the answer is 234% of 3. Before we give you an answer, let us understand the basics of “Percentage”
We write “%” as (1/100) and the meaning of “of” is ‘Product’ of the given values. Now,
- 3% of 234 = (3/100) X 234
- 234% of 3 = (234 /100) X 3
If you observe this carefully, you will come to understand that both of the above values are equal. This leads to a very important understanding – order does not matter if the values that are in the consideration are equal.
a % of b = b % of a
To begin with, let us solve the following problem –
Population of a village increases by 10% every year for two years in a row. By what percent, the population will increase effectively after two years?
Population at the end of the first year – 100 + 10% of 100 = 110Let us say that the population of the village is 100.
Population at the end of the second year – 110 + 10% of 110 = 121
Hence, the growth of the population in two years = ( ) x 100
= x 100 = 21 %
Hence the population increases effectively by 21 % after two years.
Now, let us introduce ‘ab’ formula. You should use it when the given value undergoes two successive changes.
Final % change after two successive percent changes ‘a’ and ‘b’ – a %+b% + %
Here in the given problem – a = 10%, b = 10%
Now, let us use this formula to solve the above mentioned problem
= 10 + 10 + ()
= 21% (Could you see that we have solved the problem in a single line. Is it not amazing)?
Improve the calculation power of your mind with practise. You can divide complex calculations into parts and solve it in your mind without even using paper. With constant practise you can get better at doing calculations in mind and save a lot of time in exam.
Manage your Time Effectively
Time Management is a matter of crucial importance when it comes to competitive exams. Learn to finish your attempt within a stipulated time leaving out time for a quick revision.
Practising calculations and memorising tables, square, cubes and square roots can also enhance you problem solving speed and can help you time your attempt better.
Build your Basics
In the initial stages of the start of your preparation, avoid solving questions by shortcut methods.
It’s important to be aware of all the basic theories and formulas from all the chapters. Without a clarity of basics problem solving might get difficult in Tier II.
