SBI PO Exam Pattern 2017: Preliminary & Mains Examination

SBI PO Exam Pattern 2021: SBI conducts the PO Recruitment in a 3 stage process i.e. Prelims, Mains and Interview. Every stage of the exam has its own importance and candidates preparing for the exam must understand SBI PO Exam Pattern for each stage separately. The prelims exam stage is merely for shortlisting candidates for the mains exam and the merit list will depend on the score in the mains and interview process.

So, candidates must focus on the main exam preparation as this is where their fate will be sealed. However, they should make sure that they will be able to cross the SBI Prelims cutoff given any level of the question paper. Read this article to get more details about SBI PO Exam Pattern 2021.

SBI PO Exam Pattern 2021

As per SBI notification, the examination will be conducted online following a 3 tier selection process i.e Preliminary examination, Main examination and Interview. Candidates need to qualify at each level in order to move to the next round.

Tier I: SBI PO Exam Pattern (Prelims)

Similar to IBPS PO, the SBI PO Prelims Examination is an Objective MCQ based paper with 3 sections – Reasoning Ability, Quantitative Aptitude and English Language.

Name of the Section No. of Questions Max. Marks
 English Language 30 30
 Quantitative Aptitude 35 35
 Reasoning Ability 35 35
 Total 100 100

The total time duration for all the three papers is 1 hour. Candidates have to qualify in each of the three tests by securing cut-off marks to be decided by SBI.

Shortlisted candidates for each category, meeting the specified requirements set by SBI, will only be allowed to appear for the SBI PO mains examination.

Tier II: SBI PO Exam Pattern (Mains)

Main Examination will consist of Objective Tests for 200 marks and Descriptive Test for 50 marks. Objective and Descriptive Tests will be online. The pattern of Mains Objective Exam will be MCQ based. There will be 4  sections: Reasoning & Computer Knowledge, English Language, Data Analysis & Interpretation and General/Economy/Banking Awareness. Each section will have separate time slots for each paper of the Mains examination. Let us formulate SBI PO Mains pattern in the table below:

 Name of the SectionQuestionsMarksTime Slot

Reasoning & Computer Knowledge45 60 60
Data Analysis & Interpretation35 60 45
General/Economy/Banking Awareness40 40 35

There will be a penalty for wrong answers marked in the Objective Tests. For each question for which a wrong answer has been given by the candidate one fourth of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted as penalty to arrive at corrected score.

Directly after SBI PO Mains written examination, a descriptive Test will be administered. Candidates will have to answer the Descriptive test by typing on the computer.

The Descriptive Test of 30 minutes duration with 50 marks will be a Test of English Language (Letter Writing & Essay). The candidates are required to qualify in the Descriptive Test by securing passing marks, to be decided by the Bank.

Note: Descriptive Test paper of only those candidates will be evaluated who have scored qualifying marks in the Objective Tests and are placed adequately high as per total marks in objective test.

Tier III: Group Exercises & Interview

The aggregate marks of candidates qualifying in both the Objective Tests and Descriptive Test will be arranged in descending order in each category. An adequate number of candidates in each category, as decided by the Bank will be called for Group Exercises (20 marks) and Interview (30 marks). The qualifying marks in Group Exercises & Interview will be decided by the Bank.

SBI PO Exam 2021 Final Selection

The marks obtained in the Preliminary Examination (Phase-I) will not be added for the selection and only the marks obtained in Main Examination (Phase-II), both in Objective Test and Descriptive Test, will be added to the marks obtained in GE & Interview (Phase-III) for preparation of the final merit list. The candidates will have to qualify both in Phase-II and Phase-III separately.

Marks secured by the candidates in the Written Test (out of 250 marks) are converted to out of 75 and marks secured in Group Exercises & Interview (out of 50 marks) are converted to out of 25. The final merit list is arrived at after aggregating converted marks of written Tests and Group Exercises & Interview out of 100 for each category. The selection will be made from the top merit ranked candidates in each category.
