SBI PO Prelims Exam Analysis: 1st July 2018

As we all know, the exam was composed of 3 sections i.e. Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning Ability and English Language. The exam pattern in details is as follows.

The State Bank of India has introduced some major changes this year in SBI PO Prelims Exam Pattern. This Year SBI has Introduced has major pattern changes in it, i.e., sectional timings (20 minutes for each section) for the three different sections (English, Reasoning Ability, and Quantitative Aptitude).

Tier I: Preliminary examination

Preliminary Examination consisted of Objective Test for 100 marks. The test had 3 Sections (with separate timings for each section) as follows:

Name of test No. of Questions Marks Duration
1 English Language 30 total maximum

20 minutes
2 Quantitative Aptitude 35 20 minutes
3 Reasoning Ability 35 20 minutes
Total 100 1 hour

Some highlights of the changes made in the exam pattern are given below:

  • Each section of the Prelims exam had a separate time slot (20 Minutes each).
  • Also, there will not be any sectional or overall cut-off.
  • An adequate number of candidates in each category as decided by the Bank will be shortlisted for the Mains Exam from the list of all candidates arranged in descending order of aggregate marks scored.

THE OVERALL DIFFICULTY LEVEL OF SBI PO Prelims Exam (Shift-I) was Moderate. Let us dig a bit deeper and understand the construct of the paper section-wise.

SBI PO Prelims Exam Analysis for English Language Section

  • Good Attempts: 17-19 Questions
  • Level of Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

Beginning our paper review with English Section, this section was quite easily solvable. The English Section in SBI PO Prelims Paper (Shift 1) questions distribution is as follows.

Name of the Topic No. of Qs
Reading Comprehension 5
Phrase Replacement 8
Connecting Sentences 6
Sentence Starters 6
Total 30

Cloze test questions were different from previous exam pattern, the blanks were already filled. Spotting error questions were the easiest to solve, followed by Cloze Test and then Reading Comprehension in terms of difficulty level escalating. Student finds the RC Section a bit lengthy. We expect most candidates to do well in this section.

SBI PO Prelims Exam Analysis for Reasoning Ability Section

  • Good Attempts: 19-21 Questions
  • Level of Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult

Turning our attention towards Reasoning Ability, this section was a surprise for a lot of candidates. A lot of difficult puzzles were added this year in the mix and a number of candidates were not able to identify those.

Name of the Topic No. of Qs
Puzzles (Box, Month based, Parallel rows) 12
Blood Relation & Direction Sense 3
Coded Inequalities 5
Miscellaneous 5
Total 35

While questions based on Inequalities, Direction Sense & Blood relation questions were quite easy, questions from Puzzles and Seating Arrangement cause a lot of confusion.

SBI PO Prelims Exam Analysis for Quantitative Aptitude Section

  • Good Attempts: 22-24 Questions
  • Level of Difficulty: Moderate

A lot of candidates found the Maths section to be quite moderate to attempt. The level of difficulty of Quant Section in SBI PO Prelims (Slot 1) was slightly Moderate.

Name of the Topic No. of Qs
Wrong Number Series 5
Data Interpretation (Table & Bar Graph) 10
Inequalities 5
Approximation 5
Miscellaneous 10
Total 35

Questions based on Caselet DI, Bar Graph and Pie+Tabular DI. Apart from Miscellaneous Questions being a bit lengthy, most of the quant paper could be solved with ease.

From what we can analyze, a total of 59 to 61 attempts with optimal accuracy will be a good score for SBI PO Prelims 2018 (Day 1)
