Context:

The “2021 Global Report on Food Crises” report has been released by the Global Network Against Food Crises (GNAFC).

Details:

  • The report underscores the acute food insecurity experienced by 155 million people in 2020.
  • Most of the Individuals are from Yemen, South Sudan and Burkina Faso.
  • The main reason for the push of 40 million people towards hunger in 2020 was the economic crisis fuelled by extreme weather and economic shocks related to COVID-19.
  • The Continent most affected by the unavailability of Food was Africa which makes up for over 63% of cases of global food shortages.
  • Emergency level food insecurity, which is just one level away from starvation was faced by over 28 million people in 2020.
  • The crisis resulted in the stunting of 75 million children and the wasting of 15 million children across the world.
  • Wasting refers to low weight-for-height in Children and Stunting is the impaired growth and development of children from poor nutrition.
