“Statistics Day” to be observed on 29 June 2020

The government of India has been celebrating Statistics Day on 29 June every year to increase awareness regarding the importance of Statistics in everyday life and sensitise the public regarding the benefits of Statistics in shaping and framing policies.

Key Points:

  • The day is observed at the national level on the birth anniversary of Prof. P C Mahalanobis to recognise his valuable contributions in setting up the National Statistical System.
  • The theme of the day is “SDG- 3 which is Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages and SDG- 5 which is Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls”.
  • The day will be observed virtually in 2020 in view of the safety and travel advisories that have been put in place on account of the global COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The virtual event will be held under the chairmanship of Rao Inderjit Singh, the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) of Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation and Ministry of Planning.
  • The Ministry of Statistics also instituted a new award in 2019 called Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis National Award in Official Statistics. The award recognises the outstanding achievement of official statisticians in Institutions, State Governments and Central Government.
