100-DAY PLAN FOR INDIA’S CIVIL AVIATION SECTOR

Context:

On September 9, 2021, Union Minister of Civil Aviation, Jyotiraditya Scindia, announced a 100-day plan for India’s civil aviation sector.

Highlights of the Plan:

  • According to the plan, six helicopters will be built in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand under a regional air connection project called UDAN.
  • Under the 100-day goal, the three main foundations are infrastructure, policy targets and reforms initiative.
  • Under it, 4 airports will be built or upgraded.
  • Under the plan, a new terminal will be built at Dehradun Airport in Uttarakhand to facilitate the transport of between 250 and 1,800 passengers. For this purpose, the centre has issued Rs 457 crore for its renewal.
  • Agartala Airport upgrade work will also be undertaken to increase capacity from 500 passengers per hour to 1200 per hour at an estimated cost of Rs 490.
  • A new airport at Jewar in Uttar Pradesh will be built. The government has allocated Rs 30,000 crore for it. It is expected to have a capacity of 2 crore passengers annually. In the 1st phase, Rs 9000 crore will be invested and capacity will be increased to 1.2 crore passengers annually. But by the 4th phase, passenger capacity will be increased to 7 crores.

Other Announcements:

  • He also introduced policy measures and the development of airports and heliports.
  • He also announced a new policy for Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) activities.
