13TH BRICS SUMMIT TO BE CHAIRED BY PM MODI

Context:

As part of the ongoing BRICS Summit in India in 2021, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will chair the 13th BRICS Summit on 9 September 2021 in a meaningful way.

About the Summit:

• The meeting will be attended by the President of Brazil, H.E. Mr Jair Bolsonaro; The President of Russia, H. Mr Vladimir Putin; Chinese President, H. Mr Xi Jinping; and the President of South Africa, H. Mr Cyril Ramaphosa.
• India's National Security Adviser, Shri Ajit Doval, President of the New Development Bank, Mr. presenting reports on the results followed this year under their direction to Leaders during the Summit.

Theme of the Summit:

• ‘BRICS@15: Intra-BRICS cooperation for continuity, consolidation and consensus’.

Four Priority Areas:

• India has identified four key areas for its Chair. These are the Multilateral System, Counter-Terrorism, Using Digital and Technological Tools for achieving SDGs and Enhancing People to People exchanges.

Chairmanships by PM Modi:

• This is the 2nd time Prime Minister Modi will be chairing the BRICS Summit.
• In 2016, he chaired the Goa Summit.
• The Indian Chairship of BRICS this year coincides with the 15th anniversary of BRICS, as reflected in the theme for the Summit.
