$15 Million pledged by India to Virtual Global Vaccine Summit 2020

An amount to the tune of $15 million was pledged by India to the international vaccine alliance, Gavi. The virtual Global Vaccine Summit was hosted by the Prime Minister of United Kingdom Boris Johnson.

Key Points:

  • The Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi addressed the virtual Global Vaccine Summit 2020 in which more than 50 ​countries, civil society, government ministers, UN agencies, business leaders and Heads of State and country participated.
  • In his address, the Prime Minister stated that India has shared the available stocks of medicines of the country with more than 120 countries and created a common response strategy in its immediate neighbourhood.
  • The outbreak of the pandemic has also exposed the limitations of global coordination and cooperation.
  • The Prime Minister also stated the importance of Immunization and mentioned the Mission Indradhanush initiative of India, which aims to ensure full vaccination of the country’s children and pregnant women.
  • GAVI is a public-private global health partnership with an objective of increasing immunization in poor countries. It was founded in 2000 and is situated in Geneva, Switzerland.
