$31.6 billion to be raised by WHO for ACT-Accelerator

The global response to COVID-19 led by the World Health Organization (WHO) will require $31.3 billion for diagnostics, therapeutics and vaccines in the next 12 months, and this will include 2 billion doses of vaccines.

Key Points:

  • The amount that will be raised will be provided to the global collaboration called Access to Covid-19 Tools Accelerator, or ACT-Accelerator.
  • The initiative started in April, aims to accelerate development, equitable access and production of the Covid-19 tests, vaccines and treatments.
  • The WHO has received a contribution of $3.4 billion till date and needs $27.9 billion more in funding, out of the total $13.7 billion is urgently required.
  • The organisation has planned to increase the delivery of 500 million tests and 245 treatment courses for low and middle-income countries (LMICs) by the middle of 2021.
  • WHO has also planned the development of two billion vaccine doses, out of which one billion will be purchased for LMICs, before 2022.
  • WHO has also stated that the total cost of the ACT-Accelerator's work is less than a tenth of the loss incurred by the global economy every month due to the pandemic.
