5 initiatives launched by the Central Government towards Biodiversity Conservation

Five initiatives on biodiversity conservation were launched by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change on 22 May 2020 on the occasion of International Day of Biodiversity.

Key Points:

• The National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Biodiversity Samrakshan Internship Programme has been launched by the Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Prakash Javadekar.
• The internship is a one-year program for postgraduate students interested in biodiversity.
• The internship programme was launched during the virtual celebration of International Day for Biological Diversity along with many important documents which include (i)‘UNEP Endangered Species Campaign’, (ii) ‘Awareness campaign material on-air, pollination and securing our future’, (iii)‘Model Conference of Parties’ and (iv)‘Brochure of Webinar Series on Biodiversity Conservation’.

Note:

• The International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) has been declared on 22 May by the United Nations to raise awareness and understanding of the issues of biodiversity.
• The Second Committee of the United Nations General Assembly declared 29 December 1993 as the International Day for Biological Diversity initially.
• The theme of International Day for Biodiversity 2020 is “Our Solutions are in Nature”.
