5 -member committee appointed by Sri Lankan President for examining the  development of Colombo Port

The President of Sri Lanka, Gotabaya Rajapaksa has appointed a five-member Committee that will assess and evaluate the report concerning the development of Jaya container terminal (JCT) and East Container Terminal (ECT) of the Colombo Port.

Key Points:

  • The committee will be headed by the secretary of Ports and will submit the results of the report in a period of 45 days.
  • The committee will also look into pacts and agreements signed by the Sri Lankan government with the other government for the port of Colombo with a particular focus on ECT.
  • The issue assumes importance as the government of Sri Lanka had signed a tripartite pact with the Japanese and Indian government to develop ECT.
  • The port trade unions have protested against the agreement and want the ports to be developed by Sri Lankan ports authority (SLPA).
  • The trade union had launched a strike on 2 July 2020 which was called off after talks with Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa were held.
  • The port of Colombo also accounts for 70 percent of Indian transshipments and the Indian interest in stakes in ECT led to the finalization of agreement in 2019.
