62nd session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW62)

The 62nd session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW62) was in news recently with regional consultation of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) taking place in Bangkok, China on February 22, 2018.

The High-Level meeting, Challenges and Opportunities in Achieving Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Rural Women and Girls,’ adopted a set of recommendations that will feed into CSW62 to be held at the UN Headquarters in New York from 12 to 23 March 2018.

The recommendations reflect the urgent need to strengthen normative and legal frameworks, and ensure coordinated action for their social and economic empowerment and meaningful participation in society.

About the CSW62

The CSW62 will be held under the aegis of United Nations Women (UN Women) from March 12 to March 23, 2018.

Priority theme of the Conference is “Challenges and opportunities in achieving gender equality and the empowerment of rural women and girls.”

Review theme of the Conference is “Participation in and access of women to the media, and information and communications technologies and their impact on and use as an instrument for the advancement and empowerment of women”.

UN Commission on Status of Women

The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women. A functional commission of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), it was established on 21 June 1946.

The CSW takes the leading role in the implementation of the 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, UN Security Resolution 1325, the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the Convention to Eliminate All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
