6th Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit of the G20 Countries

An Indian parliamentary delegation which is led by the Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla is taking part in the 6th Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit of the G20 countries, which is being held in Tokyo, Japan from 3-5 November 2019. This summit is being attended by Presiding Officers of Parliaments of the G20 countries.

Key Points:

  • This Parliamentary summit is unofficially called as P20. It was jointly hosted and organised by Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), an international organisation (headquartered in Geneva) and the House of Councillors of National Diet of Japan.
  • This summit would have sessions on separate themes about trade, technology and sustainable development.
  • The First Session was based on the theme- "Promotion of Free, Open and Fair Trade and Investment". 
  • The second was based on the theme- ‘Utilization of Innovative Technology towards a human-centred Future Society.’ 
  • Third Session was based on the theme- ‘Efforts towards Resolution of Global Challenges and Achievement Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs: Financing for Development, Need for Transparent and Effective Government, etc.)’.
  • During its three sessions, the Summit reviews topics such as opening investment, supporting free trade, solving global challenges facing SDGs as well as taking advantage of technological innovations to support human-centred future.
