A 1,124-megawatt power project to be developed by China to in PoK under CPEC

The People's Republic of China will set up a 1,124-megawatt power project in the Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) region, despite the objections raised by India, under the multi-billion-dollar China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Key Points:

  • The power project has been named Kohala hydropower project and was presented on 22 June 2020 at the 127th meeting of the Private Power and Infrastructure Board (PPIB) under the chairmanship of Energy Minister Omar Ayub.
  • The meeting is a tripartite meeting between the authorities in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), China’s Three Gorges Corporation and the PPIB.
  • The hydropower project has been developed on the Jhelum River with the objective of providing over five billion units of low-cost and clean electricity to the consumers in Pakistan annually.
  • The investment in the hydropower project is one of the largest by an independent power producer (IPP) in the region and amounts to $2.4 billion.
  • The China Pakistan Economic Corridor is 3,000-km in length and aims to connect China and Pakistan with optical cable fibre networks, rail, road and pipelines.
  • The CPEC connects the Xinjiang province of China with the Gwadar port of Pakistan and will enable China to access the Arabian Sea.
