A landmark of 250th session of Rajya Sabha

Rajya Sabha has been an integral part of the social and economic transformation of our country ever since it came into effect in 1952.

Key points:

  • From passing the Hindu Marriage and Divorce Bill in 1952 to the Muslim Women i.e, the Protection of Rights on Marriage Bill in 2019 (Triple Talak Bill), the Industrial Disputes (Amendment) Bill in the year 1954 to the New Delhi International Arbitration Centre Bill in the year 2019, clearing the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Bill in the year 1955 to the National Medical Council Bill in the 2019, imposition of additional excise duty on dhotis in 1953 to introduction of GST in 2017, the passage of the Andhra State Bill in 1953 to the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill in 2019, setting up of the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 1954 to empower the children with the Right to Free and Compulsory Education in the year 2009 and then passing Preventive Detention (Second Amendment) Bill in the year 1952 to the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Bill in 2019. 
  • Rajya Sabha has actually come a long way in addressing the challenges that are faced and meets the requirements of the nation from time to time. 
  • Chairman Shri Venkaiah Naidu informed the leaders of various events that are planned for celebrating the landmark 250th session of Rajya Sabha which include:
  1. To release of a publication, titled “Rajya Sabha: The Journey since 1952” which provides a glimpse of various aspects of the functioning of House and it’s Hindi version; 
  2. There will be discussion in the House on the ‘Role of Rajya Sabha in Indian Polity: Need for Reform’ on the 1st working day; And the release of a commemorative volume on the evolution of Rajya Sabha and it’s functioning with 44 articles in English and Hindi by the sitting and former members and also those associated with the functioning of the House; Also to release of a Silver coin of Rs.250; 
  3. And Release of Postal Stamp of Rs.5.00.
  • Shri Naidu informed the leaders that a Joint Sitting of Members of both the Houses of the Parliament would be held in the Central Hall on the 26th Nov which marks the 70th Anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of India by the Constituent Assembly on November 26, 1949.
