Alternative dwarfing genes in wheat can eliminate rice crop residue burning

Alternative dwarfing genes in wheat can eliminate rice crop residue burning

The burning of rice residues in India is one of the major reasons for increased air pollution in India. Approximately twenty-three million tonnes of leftover rice residues are burnt by farmers annually to get rid of the straw and make preparation for the sowing of wheat, which is another crop whose residue burning results in air pollution.

Key Points:

  • Due to the burning of residues, the environment also becomes dry and becomes a challenge for the germination of wheat varieties with small coleoptile.
  • Keeping the issues of germination and air pollution at the forefront, scientists at the Agharkar Research Institute (ARI) in Pune, have mapped two alternative dwarfing genes Rht14 and Rht18 in wheat.
  • The dwarfing genes Rht14 and Rht18 in wheat are associated with longer coleoptiles (sheath protecting the young shoot tip) and better seedling vigour.
  • The mapping of the genes on chromosome 6A in durum wheat was done by the lead Scientist Dr Ravindra Patil with his team from Genetics and Plant Breeding Group.
  •  The team of scientists also developed DNA-based markers for a better selection of these genes in wheat breeding lines.
  • Wheat lines with these alternative dwarfing genes can also enable the deeper sowing of wheat seeds for availing the advantage of residual moisture in the soil in case dry environments persist.
