AMAR JAWAN JYOTI MERGED WITH NATIONAL WAR MEMORIAL

Context:

On 21 January 2022, the Government of India merged the flame of the Amar Jawan Jyoti with the flame at the National War Memorial.

Key Points:

• This means that after 50 years of ongoing lightning, the flames at Amar Jawan Jyoti will no longer be there.
• The Integrated Defence Staff chief, Air Marshal Balabadhra Radha Krishna, hosted the event.

National War Memorial:

• The National War Memorial in India is a national monument built to honor the Indian military soldiers who fought in the armed struggle of an independent India.
• The names of military personnel killed during the conflict with Pakistan and China and the 1961 War in Goa, Operation Pawan, and other activities such as Operation Rakshak are inscribed in gold on the monument's walls.
• The monument is spread over 40 hectares and was built by the Government of India near the existing chhatri (pavilion), near India Gate, New Delhi.
• It was completed in January 2019 and launched on 25 February, 2019.

Amar Jawan Jyoti:

• It is an Indian monument built after the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 to commemorate the martyrs of the Indian Army who died during the war.
