AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL HALTS INDIA OPERATIONS

Context

Recently, Amnesty International India has halted its human rights operations in India due to the freezing of its bank accounts by the Government of India.

Details

  • Amnesty International argued that the Government has frozen all his accounts due to issues with respect to transparency and human rights violations in the country.
  • Amnesty International has been compelled to let go of staff in India and pause all its ongoing campaign and research work.
  • Amnesty argued that constant harassment by government agencies including the Enforcement Directorate.
  • Amnesty added that it had complied with all applicable international and Indian laws.
  • The Government has accused Amnesty of defying the law of the land i.e Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010, and it has remitted large amounts of money to four entities registered in India
  • Recently, Parliament amends the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010 which regulates the acceptance and utilization of foreign contribution by individuals, associations and companies.
  • Foreign contribution is the donation or transfer of any currency, security or article by a foreign source.
  • As per the bill, the public servants will be prohibited to accept any foreign contribution.
  • Under the Act, certain persons are prohibited to accept any foreign contribution.  These include: election candidates, editor or publisher of a newspaper, judges, government servants, members of any legislature, and political parties, among others.
