An initiative by BEE leads to savings worth Rs. 89,122 Crore

The report on the “Impact of energy efficiency measures for the year 2018-19” was released by the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge), Power and New and Renewable Energy through Video conference.

Key Points:

  • During the conference, the Union Minister stated the efforts of the government to reduce the energy intensity of the economy from 33 percent to 35 percent compared to 2005 levels by 2030 as pledged during the Conference of Parties 21(COP-21).
  • The initiatives taken by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency has already reduced the energy intensity of the Indian economy by 20 percent in comparison to the levels of 2005.
  • The report was prepared by PricewaterhouseCoopers(PWC Ltd), an Expert agency engaged by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE).
  • The report reflects the effect of the implementation of the several energy efficiency schemes that have increased the total savings to the tune of 113.16 Billion Units in 2018-19, which is 9.39 percent of the total electricity consumption.
  • The objective of the study conducted by a third party expert agency is to assess the impact and performance of the key energy efficiency initiatives in India, in terms of total energy saved and the related reduction in the CO2 emissions.
  • The major programmes that resulted in the increased savings are Municipal Demand Side Management Programme, Standards & Labelling Programme, UJALA Programme, Perform, Achieve and Trade Scheme, etc.
