Ancient underwater Aboriginal sites discovered by Australian scientists

The scientists of Australia have discovered the first underwater archaeological sites off the west coast, which date back over 7000 years and will enable the understanding of the technological and cultural development of the first people of Australia.

Key Points:

  • Hundreds of stone tools made by the aboriginal people of Australia were discovered by the Archaeologists in Western Australia.
  • The discoveries at the two ancient sites which are submerged under the Dampier Archipelago, took place when the seabed was dry.
  • The sites are known for its rock carvings and the rich ancient history. The two sites are also the first confirmed locations under the water which hold the evidence of Human Civilization on the continental shelf of Australia.
  • The divers of Flinders University retrieved the aboriginal objects from the waters on the Pilbara Coast, what was once a dry land located between the depth of 2.4 metres and 11 metres.
  • Cutting and Grinding tools which date back to thousands of years have been found by the divers. Dating of the sites using radiocarbon dating and analysis of changes in sea-level depict the site to be 7000 years old at least.
