ANDHRA PRADESH FORMS SEPARATE MAHILA POLICE FORCE CADRE

Context:

On 13 January 2022, the Andhra Pradesh government announced the rules of the Mahila Police Force. Also, it has created a separate women's police cadre.

About the new women's police cadre:

  • The new women's police uniform is Khaki.
  • This unit includes inspectors, sub-inspectors, Mahila police personnel, senior Mahila police, and assistant sub-inspectors,.
  • Also, female police officers will wear a unique logo called the Mahila Police Emblem. They will also be wearing a beret cap.
  • Around 90% of positions will be filled by the police recruiting board—5% from the relevant villages and 5% from the local security guards.
  • The inspectors and sub-dividers of the Mahila unit will report to the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), respectively.

Women in Police in India:

  • Women make up 12% of the country's police force.
  • Chhattisgarh has the highest number of female police officers in the country. It is around 18% of all female police officers in the country.
  • In Bihar, 25% form the non-gazetted police officers, and only 8% are gazetted officers.
  • Gazette officials refer to those in ADSP, DIG, SP, ASP, IGP, GP, etc.
  • On the other hand, inspectors, sub-inspectors, and constables are all non-gazetted.
