ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE IS NOA A LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH: LANCET STUDY

Context:

On 20 January 2022, a Lancet study stated that Antimicrobial resistance is now a leading cause of death.

Key Findings of the Study:

  • According to the study, in 2019, antimicrobial resistance killed more than 1.27 million people worldwide, which is higher than those who die of malaria and HIV.
  • Low- and middle-income countries are the most affected by antimicrobial resistance.
  • Of the 4.95 million deaths worldwide in 2019, 1.27 million have died from antimicrobial resistance. The death toll from malaria was 640,000. The death toll from AIDS was 860,000.
  • Researchers have studied 23 different types of disease-causing bacteria; of these, only six caused 3.57 million deaths.

What is microbial resistance?

  • It is a condition in which a virus that causes viruses, such as bacteria, becomes resistant to drugs while antibiotics and medications are no longer used to kill them.
  • As the virus begins to resist, doctors are increasing the dose.
  • Substantial doses kill germs, but they also affect the human body's cells. And the organs begin to deteriorate.
  • After a certain level, human bodies are unable to take antibiotics.
