ASSAM-MIZORAM BORDER CLASH

ASSAM-MIZORAM BORDER CLASH

Context:

The Chief Ministers of Assam and Mizoram want to reduce tensions across the border.

Recent developments:

  • Police in both states set fires on July 26.
  • This left six Assam police and a civilian dead and 60 others injured.
  • Assam said the shooting was one-sided and unprotected, while Mizoram said they were taking revenge for the violence perpetrated by Assam police.
  • Since the July 26 incident, the people of Assam have blocked the National Highway-306 without removing a single railway line connecting Mizoram. The transportation of people and goods to and from Mizoram has been affected in that way.

Cause of the Dispute:

  • The two states share a 164.6-mile (164.6 km) flexible border and the dispute has been going on for decades.
  • Mizoram claims that the land belongs to him based on a proclamation of 1875, derived from the Bengal Eastern Border Management Act of 1873.
  • Assam claims the land belongs to him based on a 1933 proclamation bordering the Lushai Mountains, Mizoram, formerly known as Manipur province.

Assam:

  • It is a region in northeastern India known for its wildlife, archaeological sites, and tea gardens.
  • Guwahati, the largest city in Assam, houses the silk shops and the mountain temple of Kamakhya.
  • The state capital, Dispur, is a town in Guwahati.

Mizoram:

  • A province of northeastern India, with Aizawl as its seat of government and capital.
  • The name of the state is derived from "Mizo", a name defined by the natives, and "Ram", which means in the Mizo language "land." "Mizo-ram" therefore means "the land of the Mizos".
