Ban on E-cigarette

Ban on E-cigarette

The Central government has banned the commercial production and import of E-cigarettes from the 18th of September. The government said that it wanted to prevent this new form of intoxication from destroying the youth of this country.

PM Modi, in his latest Mann Ki Baat speech, reiterated the government’s decision and said that e-cigarettes being less harmful is a myth that needs to be busted. He added that E-cigarettes do not add odor due to the fragrant chemicals that are added to it but that does not make it less hazardous.

About E-cigarettes

  • Electronic cigarettes are battery-operated cigarettes that give out aerosol when one takes a puff. The aerosol may or may not contain nicotine and can also be flavored.
  • It comes in various forms. It can resemble a traditional tobacco cigarette, cigar, or pipe, or even everyday items like pens or USB memory sticks.
  • E-cigarette’s vapor contains propylene, glycol, glycerin, nicotine, flavors, toxicants, carcinogenic substances, heavy metals, and metal nanoparticles.
  • It entered the global market in 2003 and its consumption since then has increased manifold.

Health Hazards

  • The health hazards of smoking an e-cigarette is not established. However, the studies show that the youth who smoke e-cigarettes are more likely to go on to smoke cigarettes.
  • There is also a good probability that non-smokers and children may start nicotine use with e-cigarettes at a rate higher than anticipated.
