Bangladesh ranks 109 on SDG Index

The eastern neighbour of India, Bangladesh has moved up in the new Sustainable Development Index 2020 by seven positions.

Key Points:

  • Bangladesh was ranked at the 109th position in comparison to the 116th position in 2019 among the 166 countries for which the index was created.
  • Sweden was ranked in the first position with a total score of 84.7 whereas Bangladesh scored 63.5.
  • According to the report, Bangladesh has stayed on the path for achieving the goals that relate to improving the quality of education, alleviation of poverty, economic growth and decent working conditions, and climate actions.
  • The country is still facing many challenges on seven parameters that include the goal of clean water and sanitation, good health, zero hunger, justice, innovation and peace, and strong institutions.
  • The country also registered a decline in some indicators under the goals of Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.
  • The decline under the indicators is due to the decline in the Press Freedom Index of Bangladesh and the number of detainees present in prison without sentencing.
  • There has also been a decline in the spending on health and education as a percentage of the Gross Domestic Product.
  • The index ranks the UN member countries based on the broader transformations of clean energy and industry, sustainable cities, sustainable land use, health and well-being, education and skills, and digital technologies.
