Jagadguru Basaveshwara Jayanti is observed on 3rd May 2022. Basaveshwara, popularly known as Basavanna, was a 12th-century CE philosopher, poet, social reformer, and Lingayat saint in the Shiva-focussed bhakti movement Hindu Shaivite social reformer during the reign of the Kalyani Chalukya/Kalachuri dynasty.

Key Points:

  • He spread social awareness through his poetry, which is popularly known as Vachanaas. 
  • He strongly opposed gender or social discrimination, superstitions and rituals.
  • He was also known for establishing a spiritual democracy called ‘Anubhava Mantapa’. 
  • The era starting from his birth year is also called the Basava era in the state.
