Belgium Prime Minister Charles Michel resigns over migration spat

Belgium Prime Minister Charles Michel resigns over migration spat

Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel has resigned amid pressure on his government over his support for the UN global compact on migration. The pressure increased after his biggest coalition partner, the right-wing N-VA party, quit the government over the issue.

Michel lost the backing of the party over his support for the UN migration pact, a troubling cause for European anti-immigration parties.

It has been seen that many European countries such as Estonia and Latvia, and also Chile (Latin America) faced the backlash from the public.

UN Accord on Migration

The global compact for migration was adopted in Marrakesh (Morocco), Morocco after two years of intense negotiations, but some of the signatories remain divided.

The agreement is non-binding, but for the UN, this is a unique opportunity to address the issue of immigration and refugee crises with world leaders.

The deal stresses the need to protect migrants and resettle them, but many countries have pulled out of the deal, saying it encourages illegal migration.

Some countries such as the US and other countries are against this resolution which will be formally launched on Dec 19, 2019.
