BrahMos SUCCESSFULLY TEST-FIRED

Context:

On 20 January 2022, BrahMos supersonic cruise missile was successfully test-fired from Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, off the coast of Odisha. This missile had increased indigenous content and improved performance.

Launch Site:

• Brahmos Aerospace launched it in close coordination with the teams of DRDO.

About BrahMos:

• It is a medium-range ramjet supersonic cruise missile launched from submarines, ships, aircraft, or land.
• It is the world's fastest anti-ship cruise missile that is currently operating.
• The ship-launched and land-launched versions are already in operation.
• It is a joint venture between India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Russian Federation's NPO Mashinostroyeniya, formed BrahMos Aerospace.
•  In 2012, an air-launched variant of BrahMos emerged and entered service in 2019.

BrahMos - Based on Russian Technology:

• It is based on Russian P-800 Oniks cruise missile technology and other similar Russian cruise missile technology.

BrahMos - Name:

• The name BrahMos is a portmanteau derived from two rivers, the Brahmaputra of India and the Moskva of Russia.

BrahMos-II:

• The hypersonic version of the missile, BrahMos-II, is also currently being developed with Mach 7–8 to improve the aerial fast strike capability.
• It can be ready for testing by 2024.
