CABINET APPROVES AGREEMENT BETWEEN INDIA AND PORTUGAL ON RECRUITMENT OF INDIAN CITIZENS

Context:

The Union Cabinet welcomed the signing of an agreement for the employment of Indian citizens to work in the Portuguese Republic between the Government of India and Portugal.

About the Agreement:

  • The current agreement will set the institutional framework for partnership and cooperation between India and Portugal in sending and receiving Indian workers.
  • Under this agreement, a Joint Committee will be formed to monitor the implementation of the same.

Significance of the Agreement:

  • The signing of the agreement with Portugal will add a new destination for Indian migrant workers in an EU member nation, especially in light of the large number of Indian workers who have returned to India following the Covid-19 epidemic.
  • It will provide new opportunities for skilled Indian workers and professionals.
  • At the end of this agreement, Portugal and India will have a formal recruitment process for Indian workers.

  • Indian workers could improve job opportunities in Portugal.
  • The Government-to-Government mechanism proposed in the agreement will ensure that workers' movements take place smoothly with a high level of support from both parties.

  • Relations began peacefully in 1947 after the establishment of India's independence and communications in 1949.
