Cabinet approves amendment to the Cinematograph Act, 1952

The Union Cabinet has approved amendments to the Cinematograph Act, 1952 to tackle film piracy and Copyright infringement.

A new bill Cinematograph Amendment Bill, 2019 will be soon introduced by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

Objective

The Bill aims to tackle film piracy by instituting penal provisions for unauthorized camcording and duplication of films by making it a legal offence and punishing the offender with a three-year jail term and a fine of Rs. 10 lakh.

The Bill requires the insertion of a new Section 6AA in the Cinematograph Act to ensure the prohibition of unauthorized recording.

The proposed amendments would increase industry revenues, boost job creation, fulfill important objectives of India’s National Intellectual Property policy and give relief against piracy and infringing content online.

Piracy: Loss to Indian Film Industry

Indian media and entertainment sector loses $2.8 billion of its annual revenue to piracy and India is one of the top five countries for peer-to-peer downloads.
