Carbon Bombs

Context: Carbon Bombs project reported the plans of countries and private companies worldwide to engage in 195' carbon bomb' projects.

Key Points:

  • Carbon bombs are oil or gas projects that will result in at least a billion tonnes of CO2 emissions over their lifetime. Coal, oil, or gas extraction results in pollution and environmental degradation. Carbon emissions occur in large amounts when fuel is burned.
  • Around 195 carbon bomb projects have been identified in the US, Russia, West Asia, Australia and India. These projects will collectively overshoot the limit of emissions agreed to in the Paris Agreement of 2015.
  • The report also highlights the threat of methane. It trapped 86 times more heat than CO2 over 20 years".

Carbon Bomb Sites from India:

On its website, 'Leave It In the Ground Initiative (LINGO)' has listed carbon bomb projects from all over the world. These includes:

  1. The Carmichael Coal Project (Adani Group)
  2. Gevra Coal Mines in Chhattisgarh (Coal India)
  3. Rajmahal Coal Mines in eastern Jharkhand (Eastern Coalfields)

What is the plan for 'defusing' carbon bombs?

Leave It In the Ground Initiative (LINGO)' is working on a mission to "leave fossil fuels in the ground and learn to live without them." It believes that burning fossil fuels is the root of climate change, and the 100% use of renewable energy sources is the solution.

LINGO aims to organise ground support for protesting such projects, challenge them through litigation, and conduct analysis and studies for the same.
