Carnegie Corporation of New York honours two renowned Indian-Americans

The Carnegie Corporation of New York has named Professor of Economics at Harvard University Raj Chetty and Pulitzer Prize-winning author and oncologist Siddhartha Mukherjee as '2020 Great Immigrants' honorees on 1 July 2020.

Key Points:

  • The two renowned Indian Americans have been awarded the honour for their contribution in mitigating the health crisis caused due to COVID-19.
  • They are among the 38 immigrants who have been honoured by the prestigious American foundation before the 2020 commemoration of the US Independence Day.
  • Dr Siddhartha Mukherjee is a noted oncologist, biologist and the writer of several acclaimed books,
  • He has also authored the Pulitzer Prize-winning book 'The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer'. Dr Mukherjee was also awarded the Padma Shri in 2014.
  • He has been awarded the honour for his gifts as a communicator of science for educating the masses about the virus using media interviews, essays, and via his social media accounts.
  • Born in New Delhi, Professor Raj Chetty is among the youngest professors in the history of Harvard who has been granted tenure. 
  • He has been honoured for his contribution in the launch of a resource to monitor the real-time economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on businesses, communities and people across the United States of America.

  • The Carnegie Corporation honours the legacy of its founder Andrew Carnegie, who was a Scottish immigrant who rose from poverty and became a leading industrialist by recognizing and rewarding eminent immigrant groups on 4 July every year when America celebrates its Independence Day.
  • The '2020 Great Immigrants' represent 35 countries of origin and a wide range of contributions to the American life, ranging from music, research, human rights, computer science to art, health care, sports, journalism, politics, business, education, religion.
