Centre rejects Mamata's proposal to rename West Bengal as 'Bangla'

The Centre Government has rejected the proposal of West Bengal Government to rename West Bengal as ‘Bangla’.

The Home Minister informed in the Rajya Sabha through a written reply that the centre has not approved the proposal for renaming of West Bengal as ‘Bangla’.
Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai further informed that, "Change in the name of a state further requires Constitutional amendment, after taking into consideration all relevant factors."

When was the proposal made?
It was in July 2018 that the West Bengal Assembly passed a resolution to rename the state of West Bengal as 'Bangla'. The state said that it wants to change the name of the state to come on the top of the business list as 'Bangla' will come in top states according to alphabetical order. After this, the proposal was sent to the Union Home Ministry for approval.

At present, West Bengal typically figures towards the end of the business list for either house. Top leaders of the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress as well as senior bureaucrats in the West Bengal government had argued that by the time issues of the state came up for discussion, the house was more than half empty on a typical day.

This is not the first time that the Central government has rejected the proposal to rename West Bengal. In 2016, the Centre had rejected a proposal by the West Bengal government to give three names to the state - Bangla in Bengali, Bengal in English and Bangal in Hindi.

In total, this is the fourth time West Bengal's name change request has been declined by the Centre Government. Earlier proposals were made in 1999, 2011 and 2016.
