CLIMATE INDICATORS AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: DEMONSTRATING THE INTERCONNECTIONS

Context:

On September 22, 2021, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has published a report titled “Climate Indicators and Sustainable Development: Demonstrating the Interconnections”.

Key Highlights of the Report:

  • The release of the WMO report coincides with the annual session of the United Nations General Assembly and the opening of the SDG Action Zone, which is set to accelerate action on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • The report also looks at the results of the latest data and scientific research on global climate change in sustainable development to highlight how climate change is changing and how these changes will contribute to achieving the SDGs.

Aim of the WMO report:

  • The WMO has published its report with the aim of demonstrating the link between global warming and the SDGs. This goes far beyond SDG 13 for climate action.
  • The report also highlights the need for greater international cooperation, which is needed to achieve the SDGs. It also aims to limit global warming to below 2 ° C or even 1.5 ° C by the end of the present century.

Climate Indicators

The report highlights seven climate indicators, impacting the SDGs:

  • Carbon dioxide concentration
  • Temperature
  • Ocean acidification
  • Ocean heat content
  • Sea-ice extent
  • Glacier mass balance and
  • Sea-level rise.

Increasing temperatures will lead to global and regional changes as well as shifts in rainfall patterns & agricultural seasons.
