CLIMATE RESILIENCE INFORMATION SYSTEM AND PLANNING (CRISP-M) LAUNCHED

Context:

Union Minister of Rural Development & Panchayati Raj, Giriraj Singh, introduced the "Climate Resilience Information System and Planning (CRISP-M)" via a virtual event.

About CRISP-M tool:

  • The CRISP-M tool has been developed with the aim of integrating weather information into “Geographic Information System (GIS) based watershed planning” under MGNREGA.
  • This tool will help to incorporate weather information into GIS-based planning and Mahatma Gandhi NREGA (MGNREGA) implementation.
  • The tool was developed with the help of the British Government and all stakeholders. They have supported the Department of Rural Development in developing the tool.
  • This tool will open up new opportunities for rural communities in addressing climate change.
  • The tool will be used in seven states namely, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Odisha and Rajasthan, to improve climate resilience.

GIS-based plans designed for Panchayats:

  • Ministry of Rural Development has prepared “GIS-based plans” to be used in all 1.82 lacs of Gram Panchayats (68%) out of 2.69 Lacs Gram Panchayats in India.
  • GIS-based programs will be implemented with the help of Remote Sensing Technology, based on the Ridge to Valley approach.
