Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference being held in Kampala, Uganda

The annual meeting of the 64th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC) was held in Kampala, Uganda from September 22 to 29 and was hosted by the Parliament of Uganda.

Notes:

  • This Conference is one of the largest gatherings of Commonwealth parliamentarians.
  • This year's theme for the conference is ‘Adaption, engagement and evolution of parliaments in a rapidly changing Commonwealth.’
  • The event will bring together over 500 Parliamentarians, decision-makers and parliamentary staff from across the Commonwealth for this conference and networking opportunity.
  • India strongly opposed Pakistan's propaganda on Kashmir at the Conference.

Commonwealth Parliamentary Association

  • The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association was founded in the year 1911 as the Empire Parliamentary Association, which was run in the United Kingdom(UK). Originally, it comprised Australia, Newfoundland, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and the United Kingdom.
  • It also has an independent, fully-fledged secretariat based in London, financed by all member states. The CPA in 1989 created the constitutional posts of Patron and Vice-Patron.
  • Currently, the association has approximately 180 branches and is divided into 9 regions – Asia, Africa, Australia, British Islands and Mediterranean, Canada, Americas, Caribbean and Atlantic, Pacific, India and South-East Asia.
  •  The CPA Headquarters Secretariat is based in London.
