Conference Of Parties 26 Postponed

The UN climate change conference COP26 (Conference of Parties 26) which was scheduled to take place in Glasgow, Scotland in November has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Key Points:

  • It has been announced by the COP Bureau of the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) in association with the UK and its Italian partners.
  • Delaying the talks will affect the targets that have been set under the 1.5-degree report to keep temperatures under 1.5 degrees Celsius of the pre-industrial level.
  • To limit the rise of temperature to under 1.5 degree global Carbon Dioxide emissions need to decrease 45 per cent by 2030 and reach zero by 2050, to keep it under the safe limit set as a goal in the Paris accord.
  • If the temperature of the earth rises substantially above the 1.5 degrees celsius safe limit, it will lead to Coral bleaching and thereby affecting marine life.
