CONSERVATION EXCELLENCE AWARD FOR 2020

Context

The Pilibhit Tiger Reserve (PTR - Uttar Pradesh) received international award TX2 for doubling the number of tigers in the past four years.

Details

• Transboundary Manas Conservation Area or TraMCA (India-Bhutan border) has received the Conservation Excellence Award for 2020.
• TX2 or Tigers Times Two stands for a goal which was to double the population of wild tigers by 2020.
• The Transboundary Manas Conservation Area also known as TraMCA was recognised for achieving the goal of tiger conservation by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
• The WWF had set the TX2 goal along with The Global Tiger Initiative, Global Tiger Forum and other critical platforms. The TX2 award included a financial grant in order to assist the ongoing conservation.
• The conservation centres in India and Bhutan worked towards the TX2 conservation goal. The TraMCA comprises of 500-sq km of Manas National Park in Assam and 1057-sq km of Royal Manas National Park in Bhutan.

Conservation Excellence Award 2020

The award given was based on the achievement of two or more of five themes. The themes were as follows:

• Monitoring and research of Tiger and Prey population
• Effective site management
• Enhanced enforcement of law
• Protection and ranger welfare improvement
• Community-based conservation
• Habitation and prey management
• Human and wildlife conflict mitigation
