COVID-19 India National Supermodel started by DST

A COVID -19 Indian National Supermodel has been started by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) in order to provide assistance in monitoring future infection transmission.

Key Points:

  • The Supermodel is expected to help in decisions which involve readiness of the health system and other measures to combat the pandemic.
  • Researchers are trying to figure out numerous mathematical models for monitoring and forecasting Covid-19, which is being primarily funded by DST-SERB (Science and Engineering Research Board).
  • DST has started the exercise to pool in expertise in the field and create one model for the entire country that will be put under rigorous testing for evidence-based forecasting.
  • The model will completely rely only on COVID-19 relevant data, with an in-built adaptive component for learning new data trends.
  • The policymakers in India and around the world can utilize the supermodels to predict the rate of spread of infection and how the healthcare sector would be impacted.
  • IISc, Bangalore and Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) will collaborate to connect and work with all COVID-19 modelling projects and programs in India.
